To stay at Whatipu Lodge is to take a step back in time, in the best way. Located at the southern end of the Waitakere Ranges, beside the Manukau Harbour entrance just 1 hour from downtown Auckland.
Accommodation is provided in a collection of historic buildings, including the homestead of the Gibbons family who established the kauri sawmill in the valley in 1868. All rooms retain a feeling of those early days while allowing a comfortable nights sleep in your own room.
The large farmhouse kitchen is the perfect setting for producing a full cooked breakfast for the team before the days adventures or a gourmet dining experience for hungry explorers returning from the wild coast.
Before dinner, a spot of tennis on the court dating back to 1930’s and after dinner take a turn on the full size billiard table, installed in 1947 to add to the feeling of old school elegance.
Whatipu Lodge has potential for several types of experience for your team.
Imagine a wellbeing retreat where connection with nature, history, self, each other is prioritised with morning yoga, mindfulness exercises, hilltop reflections, sharing whakapapa (family histories) can help your team become more aware of what drives them and how they can optimise working together by understanding a little more of themselves and each other.
How about a sustainability camp, we can show your team how to generate their own power, feed their community, help protect native flora and fauna and gain a better understanding of how to sustain their own productivity and work-life balance.
The “Hillary Trail” passes through Whatipu, this 70km long trail is named in honour of Sir Ed and can also weave into the theme of your team retreat. Personal and team challenge, reliance on each other, pushing through boundaries, commitment to the goal, experience and continuous improvement are all aspects of his life we can draw on.
Before the hills were milled by European settlers the area was populated by Maori for a very long time, there is evidence of at least 5 Pā sites in Whatipu and wonderful connections to Taniwha and Ancestors over the generations.
Just beyond the lodge grounds are some of the best views in the Waitakere Ranges, and an amazing array of landscapes to explore in any of Rocket Events challenging team activities.
